Why Does Jewelry Turn Your Neck Green? Causes, Fixes & Metals That Won’t

You take the chain off after a week and there's a green ring where it sat. It doesn't wash off with soap straight away. It's on your skin, not on the metal.

Most people assume it's an allergy, quietly decide they “can't wear jewelry,” and stop buying it.

It isn't an allergy. And the fix isn't a shorter wear time or a barrier cream — it's a different metal. Here's what's actually happening, and how to tell before you spend anything.

The Green Isn't an Allergy — It's Copper

Green skin is oxidation. Copper in the alloy reacts with moisture, sweat and air to form copper salts, and those salts transfer onto your skin. In trace amounts, the metal is dissolving onto you.

It's harmless. It's also unambiguous proof of what your jewelry is actually made of.

A nickel allergy is a different thing entirely. That presents as redness, itching or a rash — not a green stain. If your skin is reacting rather than staining, that's an allergy, and it's worth choosing a hypoallergenic material for a different reason.

Which Metals Stain Skin, and Which Never Will

The deciding factor is simple: does the alloy contain copper, and is that copper exposed to your skin?

The one-line test: if a chain sold to you as “silver” turns your skin green, it was never silver. It's plated brass.

Why It Happens to Some People and Not Others

Two people can wear the identical chain and only one ends up marked. The metal is the same — the conditions aren't.

Sweat chemistry. More acidic sweat accelerates the reaction. This is largely genetic and not something you can change.

Humidity. Moisture in the air keeps the reaction running even when you're not wearing the piece.

Water exposure. Chlorine in tap water and pools, and salt in seawater, all speed up corrosion on copper-bearing alloys.

Lotions and sunscreen. These sit between metal and skin and hold moisture against both surfaces.

Where the piece sits. Necks sweat more than wrists. The same chain will often mark a neck and leave a wrist untouched.

None of these variables matter if the alloy has no copper in it. That's the whole point.

The Plating Trap: Why It Was Fine, Then Suddenly Wasn't

Plated jewelry doesn't fade gradually. It fails at one thin point, and then the copper underneath meets your skin directly.

That's why the complaint is almost always the same shape: it looked perfect for months, then went bad within a week.

Thickness is the whole story:

  • 0.05–0.5 microns — flash or thin electroplate. Weeks to a few months.
  • 1–2.5 microns — heavy electroplate. Months to about a year with care.
  • 1–3 microns, PVD — molecularly bonded rather than deposited. Years.

Most listings don't state a thickness at all. That silence is the answer.

How to Tell Before You Buy

Five checks, in order of how much they tell you:

  1. Does the listing name a grade? “316L,” “925,” “14k” are specifications. “Surgical steel,” “silver-tone,” “hypoallergenic alloy” are marketing words that specify nothing.
  2. Is plating thickness given in microns? Brands that invest in thick coating say so. Brands that don't, don't.
  3. PVD or electroplated? If the listing doesn't say, assume electroplated.
  4. Pick it up. Hollow, feather-light chains are almost always plated base metal. Solid construction has heft.
  5. Sanity-check the price. A solid 20″ 316L chain cannot be made and shipped for $12. Something has been substituted.

What We Use, and Why It Can't Turn You Green

The Cost of Buying Cheap Twice

A $20 plated chain that reaches the copper in three months costs you roughly $80 a year to keep replacing.

The Apéritif Necklace is $82. Worn daily for five years, that's about $16 a year — and it looks the same in year five as it did on day one, because there's no coating holding back a reaction underneath.

If It's Already Happened

Green on your skin: harmless. It washes off with soap and water, or rubbing alcohol if it's stubborn. It'll come back as long as you keep wearing the piece.

Green on the jewelry itself (verdigris): the copper has oxidised through the surface. This can't be restored. The piece is finished.

Black or grey on sterling silver: that's tarnish, not corrosion, and it's fixable — a silver polishing cloth for light dulling, silver polish paste once it's gone properly dark.

Rust spots on “stainless steel”: it wasn't 316L. Low-grade steel with less chromium will corrode, particularly around salt.
